Sia was a smashing success

Posted in Uncategorized by Debra on the February 4th, 2008

Sia Amma’s performance at The Palms on Friday, Feb. 1, was simply amazing! What a powerhouse. Part comedy, part touching self-disclosure, part theatrical performance, I doubt anyone left that performance without plenty to think about and without a gut-level understanding of what it means for a woman to be “circumcised.”

As a fund-raiser, the show was a smashing success. Between ticket sales and donations, over $5,000 was raised in one night to continue the work of Global Women Intact. This show will fund a trip back to Liberia for Sia, for her to continue educating girls and women there in an effort to end female circumcision as part of the rite of passage.

I hope this will be an annual fund-raiser for Global Women Intact! Thank you to everyone who played a part in this fund-raiser, from those who bought tickets to those who supported my efforts in bringing this issue into public awareness, and in particular to Dave Fleming, owner of The Palms, who so generously donated his venue for the performance. Together, we all made a difference!
